What to Wear to a Pakistani Wedding as a Female Guest

A Pakistani wedding invitation can mean several celebrations with different settings and levels of formality. Start with the invitation, your relationship to the couple and the venue. You do not need a bridal outfit to look appropriately dressed: an embroidered suit, a flowing sharara or a gharara with considered accessories can all work.

What should a female guest wear?

Choose an outfit you can comfortably sit, walk and spend several hours in. A straight shirt and trousers is a useful starting point if you prefer less volume. A sharara or gharara brings more movement, while the amount of embroidery determines how elaborate the overall outfit feels. Check sleeve coverage, neckline, lining and the dupatta as carefully as the colour.

Outfits for each event

Mehndi

For a colourful mehndi, consider yellow, green, pink or a contrasting dupatta. Think about movement if there will be dancing: secure your dupatta and avoid a hem you need to lift constantly. Hussain Rehar Ciel Style offers a butter yellow straight-shirt option, while Mohsin Naveed Ranjha Kesari Style brings mustard and pink in a more detailed silhouette.

Barat

An evening barat may call for a more formal outfit, but the family's invitation should guide you. Jewel tones and richer embroidery are useful options for guests. Farah Talib Aziz Avisa Emerald Style combines a long shirt and izaar trousers with a magenta dupatta. If your outfit already has a detailed neckline, let that detail lead when choosing jewellery.

Walima

For a walima reception, consider the time and venue. A softly coloured embroidered suit can suit a daytime setting; a deeper colour may feel right for an evening dinner. A flowing Soraya Sehr Style sharara in dusty mauve is one option to compare with a straighter suit. There is no requirement for every guest to wear pastels.

Nikkah

For a nikkah, check whether the ceremony is at a mosque, a home or an event venue. Ask the host about any coverage requirements. Consider opaque lining and an appropriately sized dupatta if a head covering is needed. Discuss lining with us before ordering; the coverage shown on a model should not be assumed to match your personal requirements.

Which colours should guests avoid?

There is no single colour rule that applies to every Pakistani wedding. Ask about the bride's outfit and any family colour coordination. If you are unsure, avoid copying the bride's complete colour, silhouette and level of embellishment. White, red or black should be considered in the context of that particular family's preferences, not treated as automatically allowed or forbidden.

Sharara or gharara?

A traditional gharara is fitted through the upper leg and opens out around a knee seam. A sharara generally flares from higher on the leg. Modern designs can blur these labels, so inspect the product photographs and description. Our gharara versus sharara comparison shows the difference with examples.

Choosing your stitching option

Unstitched means fabric and separate embroidered components for your tailor to cut and sew. It is not semi-stitched. Standard Stitched follows the Mairaz size guide. Custom Stitched is prepared to your measurements. Shirt length, included pieces and possible lining adjustments depend on the selected design. Check its listing and ask before ordering if anything is unclear.

How far ahead should you order?

For the USA, UK and Canada, Standard delivery is estimated at 14 to 20 working days from order confirmation; Express is estimated at 6 to 10 working days where offered. These are working days, not calendar days. Leave extra time before your event for unexpected delays and any fit adjustments. Pakistan delivery timings and destination-specific charges are shown at checkout. If your invitation is close, check your deadline with us before paying.
